Best Student and Office Laptops for Productivity

For most students and office workers, a laptop with a recent-generation Intel Core i5 / Core Ultra 5 or AMD Ryzen 5, 16 GB of RAM, a 512 GB SSD and a full-HD IPS screen is the sweet spot. Spend the rest of your budget on battery life, a comfortable keyboard and an official warranty rather than a powerful graphics card you will not use.

Processor generations matter more than i3/i5/i7

A newer Core i5 is often faster and more efficient than a much older Core i7. Look at the model number: for example, in 'Core i5-1335U' the '13' indicates the 13th generation, and the 'U' suffix means a low-power chip designed for battery life. 'H' or 'HX' chips are more powerful but use more energy. AMD Ryzen chips follow a similar pattern.

Be wary of very old-generation laptops sold as 'new' at attractive prices. Check the release year of the processor.

Battery, power and power outages

  • Low-power U-series and Apple M-series chips give the longest battery life.
  • USB-C charging lets you use power banks and car chargers during outages.
  • Check the battery capacity in watt-hours (Wh); 50 Wh or more is good for a thin laptop.
  • Use a surge protector or UPS for the charger if your area has voltage fluctuations.

Things you will notice every day

Screen

Full-HD (1920 × 1080) IPS is the minimum we suggest. Avoid TN panels with poor viewing angles. Higher brightness (300 nits or more) helps near windows.

Keyboard and trackpad

If you type a lot, try the keyboard in a shop. A backlit keyboard helps during power cuts at night.

Ports

Check for at least one USB-C, one USB-A and HDMI if you present on projectors. A headphone jack is still useful for online classes.

Frequently asked questions

Is 8 GB RAM enough?

For basic tasks, yes. If you keep many browser tabs open, use Teams or Zoom with other apps, or code, 16 GB is noticeably better. Check whether RAM can be upgraded later.

Should I buy a used or 'box-open' laptop?

Used business laptops can be good value if you can inspect them. Use our checklist and insist on a short shop warranty.

Do I need a dedicated graphics card?

Only for gaming, 3D, video editing or engineering software. Integrated graphics handle everything else and use less power.
